This is a vintage "AutoStrop" "Valet" (open long comb), single edged safety razor. Some say a: (proprietary blade razor). Research indicates that it is a B-2, manufactured between 1919 and 1921 in Canada. The handle on this razor is seen on B-1 models, dating between 1916 to 1919. Interestingly on the blade clamp we see "Valet" AutoStrop Razor, possibly indicating a VB1 model, 1921 to 1929. The underside of the blade clamp is engraved: (AUTOSTROP SAFETY RAZOR CO. LIMITED TORONTO CANADA). Inside the razor head is engraved: PATD, CANADA 1905-1907 on the left side and under this is engraved 1914. In this same area is engraved: PATENTS PENDING. The "push to open" blade lever actually has a serial number engraved on it, 0804802. Look at all of the photos. There is a lot of info to digest.
All indications are that the leather strop is in fact original to this kit. On the clip of the strop is engraved: AUTOSTROP SAFETY RAZOR CO. LTD. TORONTO CANADA. H.J. Gaisman PRESIDENT. On the back side of this clip is engraved: VALET AutroStrop Razor. This leather strop is serviceable and could be gently used. There are two small cuts in the leather part of the strop.
Henry J. Gaisman was a major figure with developing the first safety razors, yet he never gained fame. He was issued a patent for a razor in 1904 before "King Gillette" received his patent. Gaisman was also known to serial number his razors.
There is no reason to believe that the razor head, the handle and the strop are not original to the silver travel case seen in the photos. The lid to the silver box does not latch down proper otherwise this kit remains in excellent original condition. The blades shown in the photos will ship with the kit. These blades were added by the seller. They are correct to a later date "Valet" razor yet could be used in this razor. The razor has been cleaned and sanitized. It can be used as intended.
